NIU Men's Soccer to Fight Breast Cancer with Soccer Mom Camp
April 8, 2008
DeKALB, Ill. - The Northern Illinois men's soccer team will host the Inaugural NIU Soccer Mom Camp benefiting Kicks Against Breast Cancer, Monday and Wednesday, Apr. 21-23 from 7:30 - 9 p.m. at Huskie Stadium. This one of a kind, two-night camp will bring together women of all ages to participate in two nights of one-and-a-half hour sessions emphasizing fun, athletic participation and camaraderie, all while fighting breast cancer. "The Soccer Mom Camp is an idea that was started last year at one or two other schools, and they raised a lot of money for Breast Cancer Research," assistant coach Eric Luzzi said. "We thought it was a great idea, and we wanted to be on the leading edge of an event that will spread to more universities across the country in the future." Registration is now open for all women, including those with or without kids or those with or without soccer playing experience. For more information and online registration please visit niusoccermomcamp.eventbrite.com. The registration fee is $75 per participant. Participants will receive a NIU Huskie Soccer Mom t-shirt, as well as three hours of soccer fun with the Huskie soccer players and coaching staff. Participants will be led by members of the team and staff through soccer games, exercises and other physical activities, with a friendly competition at the end that includes a chance to win prizes. Participants are advised to wear comfortable clothing and athletic shoes. "In addition to raising money for a very worthy cause, the camp will be a lot of fun," Luzzi said. "Our sport has grown so much throughout DeKalb county and the Chicago area in recent years, there are a lot of soccer moms out there. It will be a great chance for them to learn a bit more about the sport that their children are playing, have a great time doing it, and support a worthwhile cause that can help a lot of people." Children of participants are welcome to attend at no extra charge. There is no need for a babysitter, as separate activities for all of the kids that attend will be organized by the NIU men's soccer players.
"We are always looking for meaningful community service ideas for our players to be a part of," Luzzi said. "Our goal with this soccer mom camp is to raise $5,000 for Breast Cancer research. Cancer is a disease that affects so many people, and almost everyone has been touched by it either directly or indirectly, we feel it is a wonderful opportunity to do good for a lot of people." Funds raised during Soccer Mom Camp benefit Kicks Against Breast Cancer, which is the American soccer's initiative to help find a cure for breast cancer and to help women living with cancer to survive and thrive. Donations are welcome. Soccer Mom Camp is a national program held on college campuses and community centers throughout the country Event founder and organizer, E.C. Miracles is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization that is committed to social wellness, world health and education through sports event promotion and management.
